Local riding tips, club activity, and what to check on your bike before your next ride.
June's here, and the ground has dried out fast after the heatwave we had at the end of May. Parts of the UK saw record temperatures for May this year, which means a lot of bikes have gone from "stuck in the shed all spring" to "out on dry, hard-packed trails" almost overnight. That's good news if you've been waiting for proper riding weather, but it also means a few things are worth checking before you head out.
Here's what we'd suggest looking at this month, plus what's happening locally that's worth knowing about.
š² Check your tyre pressure
Hot tarmac and low tyre pressure don't mix well. If your tyres have been sitting low since winter, you're more likely to get a pinch flat or feel sluggish on the road. It only takes a couple of minutes to check and top up, and it makes a real difference to how the bike feels.
If you're not sure what pressure your tyres should be running, the number is usually printed on the sidewall. If you'd rather not guess, pop in and we'll sort it for you while you wait.
š§ Sort your hydration kit
After a heatwave, the next "normal" warm day catches a lot of people out. One bottle isn't enough for a ride over a couple of hours once the temperature climbs, especially if you're out on the Surrey Hills with some climbing in the mix.
If your bottles have gone missing over winter, or the cages have cracked, we've got a good range in stock, from basic bottles right through to hydration packs for longer rides.
š Local club activity is picking up
Farnborough & Camberley CC are active through the summer months, including time trials that form part of the Surrey League calendar. So if you're out on local roads on a weekend morning and notice more cyclists than usual, particularly riders in club kit moving at a fair pace, that's likely what's going on.
If you've been thinking about trying club riding or racing, this is a good time of year to ask around. Clubs tend to be busiest and most welcoming to new riders during the summer season, and most are happy to have someone come along for a taster ride before committing to anything.
šØš©š§š¦ Good conditions for family rides
With the trails dry and the evenings long, June is one of the best months for an after-school or after-work ride with the kids. The Look Out Discovery Centre and the wider Surrey Heath trail network are popular for this. They're flat-ish, well-surfaced, and close enough that you don't need to load the bikes onto the car.
If the kids have outgrown their bikes since last summer (it happens fast at that age), come in and have a look at what we've got. We also do part-exchange, so the old bike doesn't need to just sit in the garage.
š§ Worth a quick service
Whether your bike has been ridden all winter or just come out of storage, June is a sensible time for a once-over. Brakes, gears, and the chain take the brunt of any grit and damp from the colder months, and a quick check now is a lot cheaper than dealing with a problem mid-ride later in the summer.
Even if nothing feels obviously wrong, it's worth getting it looked at, especially before you start putting in longer rides as the weather holds.
Pop in, give us a call, or book a service slot online. Whether it's a tyre check, a new bottle, a bike for the kids, or a full service, we're happy to help, no appointment needed for quick jobs.
